The Switch

The Switch

We all go through life as if it were a roller coaster ride where we have only the option to get into the ride (birth) and getting out of it (death). But is that what life really is - A series of uncontrolled chaotic events that determine our pleasures and sorrows? Are we just like the laboratory test animals where various tests are experimented on us and our reactions are observed? How can the specie that has invented so many things live like a specie that is without a purpose? Confused and deluded we merely trudge down the dusty path of life! Isn’t this the manner in which many of us lead our lives?

My life was similar. When things went right, I believed it was because I had everything in control. When things went wrong, I believed nothing was in my control. I would not respond to situations rather I would react to situations. My life became a series of reactions. Then I joined for 11th grade in Sri Sathya Sai Higher Secondary School. The time for a significant shift in my belief system began. From being brought up as a pampered prince by my parents in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to one among the many in the bustling hamlet known as Puttaparthi, I was about to learn some of life’s most significant lessons. Puttaparthi, the abode of my Master. On His samadhi were inscribed the words ‘Love All Serve All’ and ‘Help Ever Hurt Never’. These simple yet profound phrases would later on define the lives of each student that walked out of the portals of these holy institutions.

After I graduated with a B.Com (H) degree, following my Master’s command I took up Chartered Accountancy as my career option and dove into the studies and the articleship. After 2 years of that, all I can say is CA constitutes of stunts performed by professionals and must not be tried at home 😊.

As someone who had never tasted failure, CA was a rude awakening. I had written the exams thrice but to no avail. Disheartened, I approached my Master and He said, “Do Law.”

Today I’m pursuing Law at St. Joseph’s College of Law at Bangalore. I used to wonder – would it have not been better if I had started studying law a couple of years earlier rather than waste two years in vain?

Steve Jobs said, “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So, you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down and it has made all the difference in my life.

Looking backwards I have realised that what I learnt in those 2 years has prepared me for what I am to face in these next three years. Those hours of gruelling work at the office during articleship made me ready to face what I have to. As I wrote this article, I have made peace with my failure. I would not say make peace. I am what I am because I failed and I learnt from it. I have broken out of the shackles that bound me. The make believe that I had in my mind had convinced me that I cleared one group. Yesterday when one of my friends asked me, “How do others react to your ‘switch’?”, it got me thinking. The introspection that followed the question made me realise that I was again becoming a product of reactions and possible judgements of others.

So as Steve said, I look backwards and can now see that the dots are connected. I trusted in my Master and that has made all the difference…

A Great Nation turns 70 years young...

Exactly 70 years back, the first PM of this venerable land, made the historic speech at the stroke of midnight. We had just come out of the brutal oppression of the colonial rule. The erstwhile Golden Sparrow had now become the impoverished and famished sparrow. But what a beautiful way to get back... We are now the fastest growing economy and are looked at as the only bright spot in the gloomy world. Just like the days when we were the Golden Sparrow.
We must not forget our core values. The principles of truth, righteousness, love, peace, non-violence and sacrifice have always guided the destiny of this great nation. Some deluded ones raise anti-national slogans against this very beloved motherland. Had they been anywhere else they wouldn't even be breathing now. That is the high level of tolerance that Hindustan practices. Sanathana Dharma has been the foundation of this holy land. Statements like Samastha Lokaha Sukhino Bhavantu and Vasudeva Kutumbakam are glorified here.
The economic might has been unleashed and national pride is at an all time high. Now let all witness the glorious rise of Bharat... Again!

"Government Work is God's Work"

                                "Government Work is God's Work"

I read this a few days back on the structure of the Vidhan Soudha at Bangalore. It was indeed enlightening to say the least. So I tool time to understand and try and make sense of "God's" work. Apparently , with "God", everything is slow. The metro is coming up so fast that I doubt even my grandchildren will be able to see the completed work! Also, "God", has a very interesting perspective on infra. It somehow makes sense to break down roads that are good and make them better and leave the undone roads to find their own salvation. The lakes have no respite either. The y have so much froth that I wont be surprised if few years down the line they market these lakes as natural bubble baths where bathing is at the person's own risk!
This "God" doesn't believe that cleanliness is next to Godliness. Recently, articles flashed that Bangalore has become the Garbage city from the Garden City!. Our "God" has taken this very seriously. Now we find garbage everywhere thereby living up to the newly given name!
All I can say is, like God, the government is also incomprehensible. That's all I can say.

Ascent to greatness

Strive to be the best in everything that You do. No need to worry if the struggle makes the entire world against You. Be righteous even if it means giving up your life.Seeing You and Your progress, the world will make the heavens and the earth one to pull You down. Dont be disheartened. In the eyes of the Lord, You are perfect. Let not the world depress You because the Lord loves You and You have won His heart.
The world with all its attractions os not even a speck in front of His infinite mercy, love, glory, grace and splendour. Perform Your duty i.e. dharma well as has been ordained by Him. Dont get distracted. You have to work hard in order to become the leader You are destined to. As it is said, "A leader makes others feel like subordinates but a great leader makes others feel like leaders."
The Father is the ideal example of a great leader. He moved amongst men yet made everyone feel important, indispensable and loved irrespective of who or what that person was. After seeing Him, speaking to Him and touching Him, even a love forlorn outcaste would walk with his head held high in dignity for he was touched by love divine. Let His ideals become Your ideals. Remember, Great leadership is not TRANSACTIONAL but TRANSFORMATIONAL
You are His child, born to rule His kingdom on earth. The eternal and silent Witness will make the world witness His infinite power for He is Your Lord, Thy God. Live life fruitfully with Him alone as your goal and inspiration.
If You do thus, He will come; He will come and proclaim to the entire world that You are His son of whom He is very proud!

Revive the rivers!

On 6th October, 2013 the 9 days long Sri Sathya Sai Grama (Village) Seva (in and around Puttaparthi) began. I happened to have an off that day. It was a sunday. The alumni of Sri Sathya Sai Educational Institutions and devotees of Baba clean up the river Chitravathi that flows through Puttaparthi part by part. I decided to join my father (an alumnus) in cleaning up the river. When we began cleaning alone did I relize the extent of damage done to the river. Plastic bags had almost become one with the soil, there was a lot of construction waste and so on and so forth! I really wondered if a group of about 50 were enough to deal with this herculean task! Few weeks back Puttaparthi receive good rains so the river started flowing for the first time in 5 years! A local was heard saying,"If you do your part, Mother Nature will respond..."
We have to do our part in saving and revitalizing these so called 'holy' rivers. We cannot rely on the Government for it because all that we see is fund allocation, fund swindling and no action. The citizens of this great nation must take tasks into their own hands so that this 'water-rich' land does not become a 'water-thirsty' land...

Save honey bees

I was asked to do a project on some specie that was facing the threat of extinction... I thought of going ahead with the Blue Whale. So I decided to plunge into a full fledged research on the internet. Something made me search for endangered species. Something unexpected caught my eye out of the blue. There quite a few links on Honey Bees being an endangered specie!!

I immediately went through the information available. It stated that they face the threat due to climate change, insecticides...to name a few. We don't realize how important they are for our survival. National Geographic states that honey bees are directly responsible for one-third of the food we eat. They actively take part in pollination. They are responsible for the food we eat. We are already facing food crisis round the planet. With the honey bees out of the picture...we don't need to have much creativity to foresee what will happen. As citizens of the Blue Planet, we must realize that Earth is not only for us to occupy. We have to share it with other creations remembering that unknowingly they make life comfortable for us.

So let us save the honey bees!
